Sentry vs Superman: Who Would Win?

In the world of comics, it is inevitable that some superheroes have similar power sets. This is the case with Superman of DC Comics, and Sentry of Marvel Comics. When characters have similar powers, there’s always a debate about who would win in a fight. So, who would win in a fight between Sentry and Superman? That actually depends on a lot of factors, as any character can defeat just about any other character with the right strategy and an ample amount of cunning. However, in this case, we will just be looking at their inherent powers, abilities, and traits for comparison.

Sentry: Biography

Robert Reynolds was your average meth addict who broke into a lab looking for something to get high on. What he found was the Golden Sentry Serum, a derivative of the Super Soldier Serum that created Captain America, only vastly more powerful. Ingesting the serum thinking it would get him wasted, Rob acquired god-like superpowers and decided to use them for good after using them to beat up his childhood bully. However, Sentry had a dark side to him as well: The Void.

Manifesting as a representation of everything negative about Rob, the Void was a force of mass destruction, killing millions and forcing many superheroes to team up in order to defeat it. Though Sentry would have many battles with the Void, as well as his own mental illness, he would ultimately die at the hands of another powerful entity: Knull, the Primordial God of Darkness. While he remained a ghost for a time, he was eventually able to find peace and move on to the afterlife.

Superman: Biography

Sent to Earth as a baby by his scientist father to avoid the destruction of his home planet Krypton, Superman was adopted by Johnathan and Martha Kent and was given the name Clark Kent. As a teenager, he would discover that the yellow sun gave him incredible god-like superpowers, and decided to use them for good. Originally going by the alias “Super Boy,” Clark would eventually call himself Superman as he got older.

Quickly gaining a reputation as Earth’s mightiest hero, Superman would go on to have many battles and adventures. He would also form teams with other superheroes such as the Justice Friends, Justice League, and more. Though he had many enemies, one of Clark’s greatest challenges was learning to live among mortals despite being a virtual demi-god.

In his civilian life, Clark was a reporter for the Daily Planet, and eventually married his colleague, the award-winning journalist Lois Lane. Despite many reality-altering reboots, the core characteristics of Superman have remained relatively the same over the years.

Sentry: Powers & Abilities

Gaining incredible powers from the Golden Sentry Serum, Sentry is a near-invincible god-like being with many powers. Here’s a list of his powers and abilities:

  • Immortality
  • Molecule Manipulation
  • Superhuman Strength
  • Superhuman Speed
  • Superhuman Durability
  • Superhuman Stamina
  • Superhuman Agility and Reflexes
  • Superhuman Senses
  • Flight
  • Teleportation
  • Photokinesis
  • Invisibility
  • Energy Blasts
  • Darkness Manipulation
  • Psionic Abilities
  • Biokinesis
  • Power Sharing
  • Energy Absorption
  • Genius Level Intellect
  • Self-Sustanance

Most notable here are Sentry’s molecule manipulation which he can use to rearrange molecules and create whatever he wants, and biokinesis which allows him to not only heal others and himself but also to bring people back to life.

Sentry’s psionic abilities are also incredibly powerful, being strong enough to erase himself from the memory of every living being on the planet at one point with a bit of help from Dr. Strange and Reed Richards. He’s also durable enough that he was unable to find a way to kill himself in order to erase the Void. One suicide attempt involved Setnrty throwing himself into the sun which he easily survived.

Superman: Powers & Abilities

Superman possesses a wide range of powers and abilities that mostly derive from the Earth’s yellow sun interacting with his Kryptonian DNA. Here is a list:

  • Solar Energy Absorption
  • Cosmic Energy Absorption
  • Magic Energy Absorption
  • Soul Energy Absorption
  • Superhuman Strength
  • Superhuman Speed
  • Superhuman Agility and Reflexes
  • Superhuman Stamina
  • Superhuman Senses
  • Flight
  • Heat Vision
  • Interstellar Travel
  • Superhuman Durability
  • Longevity
  • Super Breath
  • Chi Manipulation
  • Hand to Hand Combat Training
  • Genius Level Intellect
  • Self-Sustenance

Superman’s most notable powers are his sheer speed, strength, and reflexes. This, along with his superhuman durability, makes him an incredibly dangerous opponent in melee combat. His heat vision also gives him a ranged attack, allowing for even greater tactical versatility.

It’s also worth mentioning that while Superman seems to favor a simple brawling-based fighting style, he is actually a martial arts master that can fight competently when he needs to. He even has chi manipulation, making him even deadlier in melee combat.

Sentry Weakness

While Sentry may be one of the most powerful Marvel Comics superheroes ever created, he does have one massive weakness: his mental health. Filled with guilt because using his powers gave birth to the Void, Sentry attempted suicide to erase this dark manifestation of himself. His mental health issues would only get worse after merging with the Void to try and contain it for the good of the universe.

Superman Weakness

Superman’s most well-known weakness is Kryptonite, radioactive material from the remnants of his homeworld that severely weakens Kryptonians. However, Superman also has other weaknesses, such as psychic attacks, and magic spells that don’t do direct damage. Superman is also dependant on yellow sun radiation for his powers. Cutting him off from the sun can weaken him, or possibly even leave him powerless if he’s kept away from it long enough.

Sentry vs Superman- Who Would Win?

If this were just a pure melee brawl, Superman would win hands down. Though the two characters have comparable speed, strength, and physical durability, Superman’s martial arts training and chi control would give him a massive advantage. The only way Sentry would be able to compensate for this is to negate Superman’s raw speed by using teleportation to move instantly. Even so, it is unlikely that this would be enough to win the battle.

However, when Sentry’s other abilities come into play, things don’t look so good for the Man of Steel. This is particularly true of Sentry’s psychic abilities. If he wanted to, he could literally erase Superman’s memory of him mid-fight to gain the upper hand. Sentry has also been shown to be able to implant his own memories into the minds of others. This could confuse Superman, and give Sentry an advantage.

In terms of defence, Sentry once again has the advantage since he can heal himself, and possibly even come back to life if he’s killed. Though Knull, God of Primordial Darkness, was able to kill Sentry using brute force to rip him apart, Knull stated that the darkness in Sentry, the Void, bows to him, so that may have been a factor.

What about cheese strategies? Could Superman just snipe Sentry with a combination of x-ray vision and heat vision? Probably not. Sentry’s energy absorption powers would likely negate Superman’s heat vision, and his ability to teleport would allow him to close in on Superman as soon as the Man of Steel gave away his position.

Speaking of teleportation, Sentry could also cheese this battle by grabbing Superman and teleporting away from the yellow sun to weaken him. At that point, he could just beat Superman to death if he wanted or just toss him into space and let nature take its course.

In conclusion, Sentry wins this fight in almost every scenario. The only hope Superman would have would be to come up with a strategy that preys on Sentry’s mental instability. In fact, if Superman really wanted to play dirty, he could possibly exploit Sentry’s mental illness to defeat him without even having to fight him. But Superman would never do such a thing… or would he?
