Superman is one of the most iconic superheroes in comic book history. He has been around for over 75 years and his story has changed a lot since he was first created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. One thing that hasn’t changed much about Superman’s story though, is how tall he is.
In this blog post, we will explore the height of Superman throughout comic and movie history, talk about why it might have changed so many times.
How tall is Superman in the comics?
Superman is 6 ft 3in or 190 centimetres according to the DC Comics Encyclopedia.
The DC Comics Encyclopedia is a great resource or gift for any Superman fan. It has information about all of the superheroes, villains and even sidekicks from this iconic comic book company. If you want to know what someone’s height should be then look no further than the encyclopedia!
How tall is Christopher Reeves?
Christopher Reeve was 6ft 4in or 193 cm. The man was a giant. And he had an even bigger heart, as evidenced by his efforts to raise awareness and funding for spinal cord injury research after the accident that paralyzed him from the neck down in 1995.
Reeve passed away at age 52 on October 10th, 2004 due to complications arising from his paralysis. His legacy lives on through organizations such as Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation which work tirelessly to find cures for people living with paralysis like Chris did himself so many years ago.
How tall is the new Superman?
With the new Superman meaning Henry Cavill, he is 185 cm or 6ft 1in which is actually 2 inches shorter than Superman in the comics. Cavill still remains my absolute favourite Superman although people complain that he’s too short.
Superman has always been tall in my opinion. I’m not sure what people are complaining about, but if the new movie is good then it doesn’t matter how tall he is! The only thing that would make him taller than me is if he stood on a chair and looked down at me! Then maybe we’d be close to being the same height.
What is the height of the other actors who played Superman?
We have already talked about the 2 most well-known Superman actors which are Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill. Let’s take a look at who else is on the list:
Kirk Alyn: 1948 – 1950
Kirk Alyn is the first Superman who played him in 1948’s Superman and in 1950’s Atom Man Vs. Superman. He was actually 6ft tall / 185 cm.
The original Superman is Kirk Alyn, and he’ll always be one of the best actors of his time. He was a pioneer in cinema who created an iconic role that has been imitated for decades on screen. Check him out on Youtube fly through space to save Lois Lane from Lex Luthor’s clutches.
George Reeves: 1951 – 1958
George Reeves made his debut as Superman in 1951 in Superman and the Mole Men. The movie was such a success that they added a Superman TV series to it with Reeves which ran from 1952 until 1958. For those who love statistics, that was 6 seasons and 104 episodes in total. Georges Reeves was 6ft 1in / 188cm.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t old enough to watch that show but George his life story was also very interesting. He died at the age of 45 from suicide but there are whispers that he was actually murdered…
Dean Cain is 5ft 11in or 182cm. I was looking for a way to describe Dean Cain. The best way I found is, Dean Cain is definitely something else.
He has played Superman and Clark Kent in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 1993-1997 on ABC; starred as Darrin Stephens in the WB series Charmed from 2001-2006; appeared as Bobby Kennedy in 2008 on NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode “Legacy” and most recently portrayed Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell on Grey’s Anatomy since 2012 until 2017 when his character left after season 13 concluded.
I was never a fan of Brandon Routh as Superman. I just didn’t believe him as Superman. I found him much better in Arrow and in Legends of Tomorrow. He is 6ft 2 / 1.89 m just for the record.
Other honorable mentions:
John Haymes Newton & Gerard Christopher
From 1988 to 1992, Superboy aired. Superboy was more of a trial run for Smallville. As the name suggests, Superboy was about Superman as a boy. The actor that played Superman in the first season was John Haymes, but from seasons 2-4 he was replaced with Gerard Christopher because Newton’s performance didn’t impress the producers.
Unfortunately, Superboy didn’t really do much for both actors’ careers. They didn’t really go on to do anything else noteworthy. One of the reasons why Superboy ended was because another show was created. That show was Lois & Clark, which aired on ABC.
The majority of Superman movies and shows have typically focused on Superman in his adult years. However, Smallville focused on Clark Kent in his teenage years. It then followed him as he becomes the superhero we know today.
For 10 seasons and over 200 episodes, Tom Welling played Clark Kent. The actor has constantly been suggested to play the superhero in the DCEU but he never made it to the big screen, but there was an occasion that he did get to play Superman again.
This actor first starred as Superman in the Supergirl series, and then he starred as the hero on Arrow and the Flash. Furthermore, he appeared on Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow. This was part of a crossover event.
Eventually, Tyler Hoechlin took on the lead role in Superman & Lois. He will star alongside Elizabeth Tolloch who will play Lois Lane.
