The battle between Venom and Spider-Man is one of the most exciting rivalries in comics. It has been going on for decades, and it will never end. The two heroes are diametrically opposed: Spider-Man is a hero who wants to do good, while Venom is a villain that only cares about doing bad things. Today we’re going to take an in-depth look at each character’s strengths and weaknesses…
Venom is an iconic character who first appeared in Spider-Man comics in 1988. The creature was the result of a merger between Peter Parker’s nemesis Eddie Brock and an alien symbiote that had escaped from outer space. When the symbiote first bonded with Brock, it was a suit that granted him powers.
The alien creature also made Eddie more aggressive by feeding off his anger. Eddie was no longer a timid reporter, and he became vengeful towards Peter.
The symbiote also had a strong desire to kill Peter and anyone else who stood in the way. The creature was so powerful that it could mimic any type of clothing, which helped Eddie become more human-like and blend into society.
Peter Parker is the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man from Marvel Comics who first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 back in 1962. He’s well known for his iconic red and blue suit with webbed patterns on it that has become the symbol of Spider-Man’s superhero identity.
Spider-Man is a hero who has dedicated his life to protecting innocent people from danger and fighting crime in New York City. He’s very nimble since he can crawl on walls thanks to his superpowers and his spider web shooters that were created by Peter himself.
Spider-Man’s main power is his superhuman strength, and he can use it to lift heavy objects or throw them at enemies. Spider-Man also has a spider-sense that alerts him when trouble is near.
Venom: Powers & Abilities
- Super Strength: Venom is strong enough to lift heavy objects and throw them at enemies.
- Webbing: Venom can shoot webbing from his hands like Spider-Man, but the webbing is black instead of red and it’s much more powerful.
- Shape Change: The symbiote can disguise as any type of clothing that helps Eddie blend into society. It also has an unlimited number of shapes it can take, so Venom is very hard to anticipate.
- Superhuman Speed: Venom’s speed is more or less equal if we compare him with Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: Powers & Abilities
- Super Strength: Spider-Man has superhuman strength just like Venom.
- Spider Sense: Peter can sense when danger is near thanks to his spider senses. It doesn’t work on Venom, which makes him very vulnerable.
- Wall Crawling and Superhuman Speed: Spiderman’s powers allow him to crawl up walls or across ceilings and fly short distances.
- Spider Shooters: Peter made his own web shooters that he uses to fight crime.
- Spider-Man Suit: The suit of Spider-Man has also very much evolved since the beginning. It has a lot more power and utilities to take out enemies.
Spider-Man vs Venom: Powers Comparison
Spider-Man’s quick reflexes and speed are a formidable defence against Venom because he often outmanoeuvres his opponents by jumping over them or leaping away before they have time to react. But since both characters are strong in their own right, Spider-man has to come up with a clever strategy to fight Venom on an even playing field.
It’s clear that the symbiotes are stronger than Spider-Man because they have superhuman strength and can change shape into anything which gives them a lot of advantages over Peter Parker.
Spider-Man has the advantage of being able to shoot webbing, but Venom can also do that. So we can see that both heroes actually quite evenly matched. So let us have a look at what kind of rating Marvel gave both characters.
Power Grid Comparison
We are using the same numbers as Marvel has published in the character’s report. The maximum that a power can reach is 7.
No Spider-Sense Against Venom
One of Spidey’s major abilities, is his spider-sense, he can sense danger and this always gives him an edge in a fight. But against Venom, this power doesn’t work so Venom can easily take him by surprise.
Loud Noises and Heat
It is no secret that Venom has major problems with loud noises and heat. Every opponent that recognizes this flaw will immediately use this against him which could end the fight quite rapidly.
Spontaneous Fight vs Prepared Fight
In several fights like the one between Hulk vs Juggernaut or Captain America vs Iron Man, we stated that there’s no difference between a spontaneous fight and a prepared fight. But this is not the case with Venom and Spider-Man, this will actually decide the fight.
This fight would be definitely won by Venom. As Spider-Man’s spider-sense is out of order against Venom, Peter wouldn’t see him coming and Venom could pin him down before Spidey could do anything to defend himself.
In a prepared fight, all our points go Spider-man. He will find out at some point that the symbiote is very vulnerable to loud noises and fire so he would use this to his advantage over and over again.
If we compare our research with the numbers from Marvel, we believe we are all aligned. Spider-man would always come out on top. Venom only has a small chance if he could catch Peter by surprise as Spider-Man can’t count on his spider-sense against Venom.
The only thing that we were a little bit surprised about is that Marvel gave Spider-Man the same score in strength as Venom which is 4 out of 7. I have always found that Venom was much stronger than Spider-Man if we compare pure strength of course. I think that 4 out of 7 for Venom makes sense but I would have given Spider-Man a 3 maybe even a 2.
Still, we should not forget that Venom now also has evolved to some kind of anti-hero so we would probably see both heroes more on the same side than going head to head.
