Venom vs Thanos: Who Would Win?

Venom vs Thanos is a matchup that few might consider since they’ve never really had much contact with one another in any form of media. Even so, Venom is one of Marvel’s most popular anti-heroes while Thanos remains one of their biggest big bads. So, who would win in a fight? With that said, review the powers, strengths, weaknesses, and abilities of these two characters and see who would win in a one-on-one fight!

Venom (Eddie Brock) Biography

Eddie was born to Carl and Jamie Brock in San Francisco. His mother would die during childbirth, causing his father to blame him and treat him coldly. Eddie would strive to earn his father’s love and approval in many ways, such as developing Olympic-level strength through bodybuilding and getting straight A’s in school. However, his father would never care or love his son.

As an adult, Eddie would become a successful journalist and would do a series of interviews with a man claiming to be the infamous serial killer, the Sin Eater. However, this man was actually Sin Eater’s delusional neighbour and the hoax was revealed when Spiderman captured the real Sin Eater. Eddie was fired in disgrace, his father completely disowned him, and his wife left him.

Blaming Spider-Man for ruining his life, Eddie went to the Our Lady of Saints church to kill himself. This is where he met the black alien symbiote that had previously been bonded to Spider-Man but had been discarded when Peter attempted to kill it with the sonic waves of the church bell. Sharing an intense hatred for Spider-Man, the two bonded and became Venom. During this time, Eddie’s criminal activities were mostly limited to trying to kill Spider-Man, though he wasn’t above terrorizing his wife Mary Jane, or his Aunt May in the process.

Eventually, Venom came to realize that Spider-Man wasn’t such a bad person and moved back to San Francisco to become a “Lethal Protector” style anti-hero for a time. Ultimately he would lose the symbiote who would go on to become the host for many other characters such as Mac Gargan (formerly the Scorpion) and Flash Thompson (Peter Parker’s friend from high school). Eventually, Eddie and the symbiote would reunite to battle and ultimately kill the god of symbionts, Knull. It was around this time that Eddie discovered that he had a son, Dylan. Unfortunately, the boy would be fatally wounded trying to stop a mugging and the Venom symbiote would have to bond with him to save his life. Eddie acknowledged his son as the new Venom and gave them his blessing.

Thanos Biography

Thanos was born to A’Lars and Sui-San, members of a god-like race that lives on Saturn’s moon Titan. Deformed due to Deviant Syndrome, his mother instantly went mad after giving birth and tried to kill him. Shortly after Thanos birth, there was some time travelling/reality-altering weirdness involving the Punisher, Ghostrider, Galactus, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Ultimately their meddling with the timeline was mostly negated but Death would state that the Punisher’s actions would fill Thanos with bloodlust and cause him to become one of her best agents.

Thanos was mostly a peaceful introvert during his childhood, but his dark nature would sometimes show itself like when he drew pictures of dead animals. This dark nature was encouraged by a mysterious girl that no one could see but Thanos himself, and he began to kill and dissect his fellow Titans to try and learn the truth of why he was different from them. After murdering his mother, he became despondent and swore off killing, leaving Titan to become a space pirate. He also bred with as many women as he could just to try and feel emotions again but it didn’t work.

Eventually, the mysterious girl who encouraged Thano’s dark nature would appear again and be revealed as the personification of Death. Thanos would be driven completely insane by this revelation and fall madly in love with her. To prove himself worthy of her love, Thanos would become an omnicidal maniac. He would even use his vast scientific knowledge to experiment on himself and gain many superpowers. This would make him one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel universe capable of easily taking on entire teams of superheroes.

Thanos has hatched many schemes to slaughter all life in the universe with his most infamous occurring during the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. After obtaining the omnipotent power of the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos killed half of all life in the universe just to impress Death. However, Death shunned him since he was an omnipotent god while she was just a mere fragment of existence. Overcome by his doubts and insecurities, Thanos would be defeated by a variety of heroes including Adam Warlock who used the gauntlet to undo all the harm Thanos had done to the universe.

Venom: Powers & Abilities

Bonded with the alien symbiote, Eddie Brock possesses a wide range of powers and abilities that allow him to go toe-to-toe with some of Marvel’s most powerful characters. Here is a quick list of what he can do:

  • Superhuman strength
  • Superhuman durability
  • Superhuman speed/agility/reflexes
  • Superhuman stamina
  • Regenerative healing factor
  • Organic webbing
  • Wall crawling
  • Tentacles/weapon formation
  • Invisibility
  • Limited telepathy
  • Telepathic resistance
  • Poisonous fangs
  • Omnidirectional awareness
  • Genetic memory
  • Offspring detection
  • Body chemistry manipulation
  • Symbiote assimilation
  • Expert marksman
  • Skilled hand-to-hand combatant
  • Journalism/investigative skills

As Venom, Eddie Brock has all of the powers of Spider-Man but to a greater degree. This makes him both incredibly strong, but at the same time, very fast and agile as well. Despite this, Eddie rarely bothers to avoid enemy attacks due to just how durable the symbiote is. In fact, the symbiote is so tough that it can easily tank blows from enemies like the Juggernaut, protect Eddie from high-caliber gunfire, and even stop bladed weapons. Outside of a few key weaknesses, it is extremely hard to hurt Venom.

The Venom symbiote also has the ability to form tentacles and other weapons from itself, but again Eddie rarely uses this ability. Instead, Eddie is a brawler, using his fists, and sometimes his webbing, to give enemies a good ol’ fashioned beat down. He also has poisonous fangs which he will sometimes use as well, though he claims his threats of cannibalizing his enemies are just jokes.

Venom has a few lesser-known powers as well, such as being able to blend in with the background to create a sort of Predator-like invisibility, telepathy between the symbiote and host, and omnidirectional awareness that warns him of danger from any angle. On top of this, the symbiote grants its host telepathic resistance, making it difficult to assault Venom mentally or place him under mind control.

Thanos: Powers & Abilities

As a mutant Titan, Thanos was already physically and mentally superior to members of his own race, let alone normal humans. However, thanks to his experimentation on himself, he also possesses a wide variety of superpowers that make him one of Marvel’s most powerful villains. Here’s a quick list:

  • Superhuman strength
  • Superhuman agility/speed/reflexes
  • Superhuman stamina
  • Virtual invulnerability
  • Immortality
  • Regenerative healing factor
  • Telepathy
  • Telepathic resistance
  • Matter manipulation and control
  • Energy manipulation and projection
  • Mystic capabilities
  • Flight
  • Teleportation
  • Super-genius intellect
  • Skilled hand-to-hand combatant
  • Occultism

Thanos has all the superhuman physical attributes that you’d expect from a god-like entity. This comes from a combination of being a mutant, mystical enhancement thanks to Death, and cybernetic augmentation. Thanos can even increase these powers further by absorbing cosmic energy.

Speaking of energy absorption, Thanos has a wide range of energy manipulating skills which he works into his fighting style. He can create generic energy blasts so powerful that he was able to knock Galactus all the way across the moon and damage his armor. He can also manipulate energy to form a variety of shields and barriers thanks to his telepathic link to his techno-mystic chair. This chair also gives him the ability to teleport as long as he maintains his mental link with it.

In terms of durability, Thanos is extremely hearty, able to go toe-to-toe with the Hulk, and even take virtually no damage from a Power Gem enhanced Thor. If by chance Thanos is injured, he also has a healing factor as well though he is unable to regenerate missing organs such as his heart. On top of all this, Thanos is also a powerful telepath with resistance to telepathy. His most powerful telepathic attack is called the Time-Mind Sync Warp which puts his enemy into a psychic dimension of pure madness that will either incapacitate or kill them.

Venom: Weaknesses

Venom has two very glaring weaknesses: heat-based attacks, and sonic-based attacks. Both of these attack types disrupt the symbiote’s molecular structure and cause it great pain. This pain is also transferred to the host as well and can incapacitate them if they don’t possess a strong will.

Another weakness that Venom possesses is his mental state. Both Eddie Brock and the symbiote have serious psychological issues ranging from PTSD to psychopathic tendencies. In a worst-case scenario Eddie and the symbiote may even turn on each other, leaving Eddie powerless, and the symbiote without a host to properly guide its actions.

Thanos: Weaknesses

Unlike Venom, Thanos has practically no inherent weaknesses. However, he does have some psychological weaknesses that have cost him battles on numerous occasions. For one thing, Thanos is a raging egomaniac and narcissist. This leads him to be massively overconfident in practically everything he does. His ruthless nature also means that he can only force his minions to follow him out of fear, rather than true respect.

Another weakness is Thano’s love for Death. This has made him her pawn for nearly his entire life, and the fact that she does not love him back has made Thanos vulnerable to insecurities and anxiety on several occasions. These weakened emotional states then leave Thanos vulnerable to being defeated by his enemies due to his own preoccupation with his unrequited love for Death.

The fact that Thanos relies on his techno-mystic chair for some of his powers is also a weakness. If the chair is destroyed, or if his mental link to it is severed, then he can’t use some of his powers like teleportation or barrier creation. This is typically negated by keeping the chair stored in a safe location.

Thanos vs Venom: Who Would Win in a Fight?

Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat, there is almost no way that Venom could ever beat Thanos in a straight-up one-on-one fight. Even when Venom had the power of Knull, the god of the symbiotes, there is practically no way he’d be able to defeat Thanos in outright combat. With this being the case, let’s explore some of the ways Thanos might defeat Venom before taking a look at one unlikely scenario in which Venom may actually win.

Venom is vulnerable to heat-based attacks, so if Thanos were feeling lazy he could just fry Venom with a heat-based energy blast. Venom is superhumanly agile though and can perceive attacks from any angle, so it may take a while for Thanos to land a killing blow.

In a straight-up brawl, Thanos also wins. While their fighting skills are pretty similar, Thanos out-classes Venom in pretty much all physical attributes. Once again, this would take a while thanks to the extreme durability of the symbiote, but in the end, Thanos would come out on top.

One method that likely wouldn’t work for Thanos is telepathy. Thanks to the symbiote’s natural telepathic resistance, it is unlikely that Thanos could conjure up a telepathic assault strong enough to incapacitate it, or bend its mind to his will.

If Thanos wanted to get creative, he could grab onto Venom, then use his techno-mystical chair to teleport both of them close to a star. The intense heat would kill Venom almost instantly while doing practically no damage to Thanos.

So, things are looking really grim for Venom in this match-up. However, there is one possible way that he could win, but it’s a long shot. Exploiting Thano’s emotional weakness due to his obsession with Death, there may be a slim possibility that Eddie could talk Thanos into killing himself to be with his love. Since Eddie and the symbiote have had such tough lives, they know true emotional pain and may be able to connect with Thanos empathetically. This is of course unlikely since Thanos is a complete sociopath, but it’s honestly the best chance Venom has to win this battle.

And there you have it, Thanos wins this battle due to simply outclassing Venom in almost every way possible. Even if Eddie could talk Thanos into killing himself, there is a very high possibility that Thanos would also kill Venom before taking his own life. Of course, Death would probably just bring Thanos back to life as she has done in the past, depriving him of being with her and driving him even more insane with unrequited love.

While Venom loses the battle, Thanos certainly loses the war. Eddie has shown himself capable of recognizing his flaws and bettering both his life and himself as a person. On the other hand, Thanos will forever be stuck simping for a universal entity that will never love him. No matter how many acts of carnage he commits in her name, Thanos will always be nothing more to her than an omnicidal boy-toy.
